UniCredit Weighs Broader Digital Asset Custody and Brokerage Push

- The main variable is whether UniCredit moves from product-level experimentation into full-service infrastructure. Custody and brokerage would represent a deeper commitment than offering limited client exposure through structured products.
- The choice of technology providers will matter. It could shape what assets the bank can support first, how tightly services are controlled, and whether access is aimed at professional clients before any broader rollout.
- Markets should also watch how closely any future launch is tied to tokenized securities and stablecoin use, rather than direct spot crypto access. That would point to a more institutionally focused model built around regulated financial products.
UniCredit is considering an expansion of its digital asset business to include custody and brokerage services, with the bank evaluating technology providers to build infrastructure for holding digital assets and supporting trading activity.
The discussions are still at an early stage, and no formal launch of custody or brokerage services has been announced. UniCredit is assessing infrastructure that could support both the safekeeping of digital assets and the execution of related trades.
The bank is also weighing a wider set of digital asset activities. Those include tokenized investment products, tokenized fixed-income securities, customer use of stablecoins and ways to give clients exposure to cryptocurrencies. The current review suggests UniCredit is not limiting its assessment to a single product line.
UniCredit has already taken several steps in adjacent areas. It has offered structured products linked to BlackRock's IBIT to professional clients, issued what it described as Italy's first tokenized mini-bond on a public blockchain and participated in the establishment of Qivalis, a company that issues euro stablecoins.
This week, the bank also acquired a minority stake in German lending market platform VC Trade. While that deal is separate from the custody and brokerage review, it adds to a broader pattern of engagement with digital and market infrastructure.
Why It Matters
UniCredit's review adds to signs that established European banks are exploring digital asset services beyond one-off pilot projects. If the bank proceeds, the move could help connect crypto custody, brokerage, tokenized securities and stablecoin-based settlement more directly with traditional banking channels.
The development is also notable because it points to how large financial institutions may enter the sector: not necessarily through unrestricted crypto offerings, but through regulated infrastructure, professional-client products and tokenized versions of familiar financial assets.
