Stakefish Founder Pushes Back on Lawsuit Over ETH Reward Claims

  1. The key variable is whether the case remains narrowly focused on a specific disputed transaction flow or expands into a broader test of validator responsibility for off-chain claims.
  2. Markets should also watch whether staking operators, relays, or other Ethereum infrastructure providers face pressure to screen transactions beyond protocol rules, which could alter how neutrality is defined in practice.
  3. Any formal response from Lido Finance, court filings that clarify the plaintiff’s theory, or signs that similar claims may target other validators would matter more than short-term headline reaction.

Wang Chun, co-founder of F2Pool and founder of stakefish, said on X that stakefish cannot decide off-chain ownership disputes after a lawsuit filed on September 8 in Santa Clara County Superior Court accused Lido Finance and Stakefish over ETH claimed through competing high-priority fee transactions following a wallet hack.

According to Wang Chun’s post, the lawsuit was brought by Oleksii Trofimchuk against Lido Finance and Stakefish. The complaint alleges that after Trofimchuk’s wallet was hacked, competing MEV bots used high-priority fee transactions to claim ETH.

Wang said Stakefish acted only as a validator and packaged legitimate transactions under Ethereum protocol rules. He argued that a validator is not in a position to determine off-chain ownership, or to decide between competing claims to assets when those claims are not verifiable through the protocol itself.

His response focused on the legal and operational boundary between on-chain execution and off-chain disputes. Wang said requiring validators to retrieve rewards based on off-chain claims would create legal uncertainty around staking rewards and force validators to filter transactions based on ownership assertions they cannot independently verify.

The dispute touches a sensitive part of Ethereum’s market structure: how MEV-related transactions are processed and whether infrastructure operators can be held liable when valid on-chain activity is later challenged in court. The available information does not establish how the court will assess the plaintiff’s claims, or whether the allegations extend beyond the validator’s role in processing protocol-valid transactions.

Why It Matters

The case matters because it goes beyond a single dispute over ETH rewards and raises a larger question for Ethereum staking infrastructure: whether validators should remain neutral executors of protocol-valid transactions, or take on responsibility for off-chain ownership conflicts. That distinction is important for staking operators, liquid staking protocols, and users who rely on predictable transaction handling.

If courts or litigants increasingly challenge validators over post-hoc asset claims, the issue could affect how blockchain infrastructure providers assess legal risk, compliance obligations, and transaction selection policies. For Ethereum, that would put pressure on one of the network’s core operating assumptions: trusted neutrality at the validator layer.
