South Korea's DRAM Export Prices Soar 401% Year-on-Year in August, SK Hynix Predicts Memory Shortage Will Worsen Next Year
South Korea's DRAM export prices continue to rise, with the export unit price reaching $92,183 per kilogram from August 1 to 20, marking a 401% year-on-year increase and approximately a 12.5-fold rise from the low point in January 2023. Goldman Sachs predicts that the DRAM supply gap will widen from 5.0% this year to 5.9% next year. The limited production capacity absorbed by HBM and high-capacity server DRAM for AI servers has further tightened the supply of ordinary DRAM, with shortages potentially lasting until 2028. TrendForce estimates that by the end of next year, the wafer input for HBM production by Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron will account for 30% of the total DRAM wafer input, while HBM will only represent about 13% of the actual DRAM bit supply. Memory manufacturers warn that the supply tightness of DRAM and NAND driven by AI demand may persist beyond 2027. SK Hynix stated that 2027 could become the most severe shortage year in the history of the memory industry.
