Shell Considers Sale of $8 Billion U.S. Chemical Assets
Shell's U.S. chemical business has emerged as a potential target for acquisition, valued at up to $8 billion. Companies such as ExxonMobil, LyondellBasell, Apollo Global Management, and Kuwait Petroleum Corporation have shown interest. Potential buyers have submitted non-binding offers for Shell's U.S. chemical assets, with proposals ranging from full business acquisitions to partial asset purchases. If the deal goes through, it would align with Shell's strategy to downsize its chemical operations and the ongoing portfolio reshuffling among energy giants. The assets under review include key chemical facilities that Shell owns in the U.S., specifically four locations: Deer Park in Texas, Geismar and Norco in Louisiana, and Monaca in Pennsylvania. The Monaca plant began operations in November 2022, with Shell investing approximately $14 billion in the facility. The valuation of up to $8 billion is lower than the investment amount for the Monaca facility, raising speculation in the market about the possibility of a discounted sale. Shell plans to explore strategic opportunities and partnerships for its U.S. chemical assets at a capital markets briefing in March 2025. Additionally, the chemical sector has been facing ongoing losses, prompting Shell to decide to sell its European onshore renewable energy portfolio. Non-binding offers are part of the initial process to express acquisition intentions and conditions, which will subsequently lead to due diligence and price negotiations before final contracts are established.
