Importing Phones Requires IMEI Code Registration from September 4
Starting from September 4, 2023, when importing mobile phones into Ukraine, importers are required to provide information about the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) of each device. The unique number of each smartphone must now be included in the electronic customs declaration. This new mechanism aims to prevent the import of counterfeit products and increase transparency in the domestic electronics market. The initiative has been supported by importers, business associations, and public representatives. Customs will monitor the legality of the movement of goods and the presence of IMEI data when crossing the border. The generated data array will be used to track products within the country. Government agencies will oversee the sale of phones and respond to cases of importing equipment through illegal channels. It is expected that the mandatory registration of IMEI codes could additionally bring over 5 billion hryvnias to the state budget of Ukraine annually.
