Cardano governance vote faces deadline with low support
Cardano's vote to elect four Constitutional Committee members is in its final week, with both voter groups significantly below required support levels. If support does not reach the necessary thresholds by September 1, governance could face a continuity break. Currently, delegated representatives (DReps) show 41.7% support against a 67% threshold, while stake pool operator (SPO) support stands at 12.0%, compared to the required 51%. The vote is crucial as it would fill four seats before four incumbents leave, but failure would reduce active seats to three, hindering necessary governance actions. Recent readings indicate rising support, with DRep support increasing from 32.46% on August 17 to 41.7% on August 25, and SPO support rising from 1.95% to 12.0% in the same period. However, substantial gaps remain: 25.3 percentage points for DReps and 39.0 points for SPOs. If the vote fails, the committee would drop from seven to three members, creating a governance bottleneck under CIP-1694, which prohibits an undersized committee from ratifying actions requiring approval. Despite this, Cardano's network operations would continue unaffected. Paths to restore governance remain, allowing for new committee updates even in an undersized state. The outcome remains uncertain as both groups must close significant gaps before the deadline.
