AI Divides Magnificent Seven Into Winners and Laggards, Says Lo Toney
AI is dividing the Magnificent Seven stocks into distinct categories rather than benefiting them as a unified group, according to Lo Toney, founding managing partner of Plexo Capital. Toney emphasized that infrastructure control and the ability to profit from it are key differentiators among the stocks. He categorized Google, Microsoft, and Amazon as hyperscalers, cloud giants building large AI data centers, which must demonstrate that their spending yields returns. In contrast, Meta and Apple leverage AI to enhance their existing advertising and hardware businesses without needing it as a standalone venture. Tesla is viewed as a unique case, transforming AI into tangible products and services, facing its own regulatory and profitability challenges. Nvidia is also distinct, profiting while its clients validate the economic viability of AI. Nvidia's recent agreement to acquire the open-source AI platform Hugging Face for approximately 12.9 billion dollars highlights its strategic position. Toney identified Alphabet's Google as his top pick, citing its ownership of data centers and custom chips, along with monetization through search, YouTube, cloud services, and Waymo. Google shares have risen about 42% in the past year, with a Wall Street consensus suggesting an additional 25% upside. Toney concluded that not all Magnificent Seven stocks will perform uniformly as AI reshapes their financial landscapes.
