Danish Central Bank Flags Spillover Risks From Dollar Stablecoins

  1. The main variable to watch is whether stablecoin infrastructure moves deeper into banks, financial institutions, and payment apps in Europe. Denmark said current use is limited, but wider integration could change the scale and relevance of the risk.
  2. Markets should also watch how European authorities frame settlement and payment standards as stablecoin adoption expands. Danmarks Nationalbank’s emphasis on central bank money for interbank settlement suggests policymakers are focused on preserving control over core financial plumbing.
  3. A further signal is whether concerns stay at the level of monitoring or develop into more formal supervisory or regulatory responses tied to cross-border dollar liquidity exposure.

Danmarks Nationalbank said stablecoin use in Denmark remains low and does not currently threaten domestic financial stability, but warned that the global expansion of dollar-pegged stablecoins could expose the country to indirect volatility and liquidity risks through international financial channels.

The central bank said there are currently no stablecoins in circulation denominated in Danish kroner, and that use by consumers and businesses in Denmark remains limited. On that basis, it does not see an immediate domestic financial stability threat.

Its warning focused instead on spillover risk from the global market for dollar-linked stablecoins. Danmarks Nationalbank said USDT and USDC dominate that market, and that stress affecting overseas stablecoins could reach Denmark through global liquidity channels and the U.S. financial system.

The bank also pointed to a possible shift in usage if commercial banks, other financial institutions, and payment applications continue integrating stablecoin-related infrastructure. That would not necessarily create an immediate disruption, but it could make stablecoin activity more relevant to funding conditions, payments, and market functioning over time.

As part of its policy response, Danmarks Nationalbank said it is working with the European Central Bank to help ensure that central bank money remains the primary settlement asset for interbank transactions. The statement places Denmark’s concerns within a broader European debate over how stablecoins should interact with existing payment and settlement systems.

Why It Matters

The warning adds to a wider policy focus on how dollar-based stablecoins could influence financial systems outside the United States even where local adoption is still modest. For crypto markets, that matters because the debate is no longer limited to retail use or token issuance. Central banks are increasingly examining how stablecoins could affect liquidity transmission, settlement design, and dependence on U.S. dollar-linked infrastructure.

For Europe, the issue goes beyond Denmark. If more payment providers and financial institutions adopt stablecoin rails while central banks insist on preserving central bank money at the core of interbank settlement, the result could shape how stablecoin regulation, payment integration, and institutional access develop across the region.
