Tim Cook Compares Surge in Memory Semiconductor Prices to a Once-in-a-Century Flood
Tim Cook, Apple CEO, compared the surge in memory semiconductor prices to a 'once-in-a-century flood.' He stated that he has never seen such a price shock in his 40-year career. Recently, Elon Musk also described the price increase as 'the largest price increase I've ever seen.' Cook explained that Apple tried not to pass the rising prices of memory and storage devices onto consumers, but the cost pressures have reached an unbearable level. The background of the price surge is the demand from AI data centers, which are rapidly absorbing memory, storage, and power. According to The Wall Street Journal, consumer prices for computer software and accessories have risen by about 15% compared to a year ago. Apple has raised prices on several Mac and iPad models, and major electronics companies like Microsoft, HP, Dell, and Nintendo have also increased their prices. Cook stepped down as Apple CEO on the 1st, and John Turnus has been appointed as the new CEO.
