The Economist Estimates AI Created Approximately 1 Million Jobs in the U.S.
AI has created approximately 1 million new jobs in the United States to date, far exceeding the roughly 200,000 jobs lost due to AI layoffs since mid-2023. The employment data released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics on September 4 shows that the U.S. economy added 162,000 jobs in August, with the unemployment rate holding steady at 4.1%. The unemployment rate for young people aged 20-24 is close to its lowest level relative to the overall unemployment rate in decades. Job growth is primarily driven by high-skilled positions directly serving AI and blue-collar jobs spurred by data center construction. Since 2022, there has been an increase of about 730,000 positions for engineers, software developers, mathematicians, and data scientists. The Burning Glass Institute estimates that currently about 1% of professional jobs in the U.S. can be classified as AI jobs, with that proportion reaching 4% to 5% in the fields of computer science and life sciences. Spending on data center construction has increased by 60% within a year, leading to a rise in demand for electricians, HVAC technicians, and others. Data from Indeed shows that salaries for data center installation and maintenance positions are about 40% higher than similar jobs. Customer service positions have shrunk by about 10% since January 2023, and administrative assistants have seen a reduction of about 15%. Microsoft and Meta have reduced staff while restructuring their businesses around AI, while companies like Block and Intuit have replaced some human roles with automation tools. On average, U.S. companies announce about 16,000 layoffs related to AI each month.
