South Korean Police Arrest Four Uzbek Nationals for Transferring Funds to Syrian Terrorist Organization
The Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency in South Korea arrested four Uzbek nationals in April under the Anti-Terrorism Financing Act. The main suspect has been prosecuted, detained, and is undergoing trial, while the other three have not been detained and are under investigation, with one of them subject to a red notice issued by Interpol. Police allege that from August 2024 to April 2025, the main suspect transferred 4,267 USDT to the Syrian terrorist organization Katibat Tawhid wal Jihad (KTJ) in seven transactions. KTJ, established in 2014, is primarily composed of Central Asian militants and has been designated as a terrorist organization by the United Nations and the United States. Investigations reveal that the main suspect is also accused of receiving cryptocurrency from KTJ to purchase 11 used cars and two excavators, totaling 170 million Korean won (approximately $121,000), and shipping the vehicles to Syria, while the other three are suspected of assisting in procurement and export. Police stated that this case marks South Korea's first involving the receipt of cryptocurrency from a terrorist organization for the purchase and supply of vehicles, and the investigation is ongoing.
