Sam Altman Denies Possibility of OpenAI IPO in 2026
Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, stated that pursuing an IPO for OpenAI at this time is premature, denying the possibility of a public offering in 2026. He emphasized that the competition in AI development has entered a high-risk phase, and that expanding model performance and ensuring safety must go hand in hand. In a Fortune interview on September 12, Altman remarked, "Now is not a wise moment to go public," asserting that securing AI safety and controllability takes precedence over an IPO. He assessed that the world is already late in discussing concerns about the future of AI, stating, "It feels like it’s already too late for the world to be discussing this issue." Altman mentioned that rather than fixating excessively on the definition of AGI, we should observe the rapid changes in model capabilities, explaining that the key is the expansion of capabilities itself rather than whether AI surpasses humans in economically useful tasks. Regarding concerns that AI could pose a threat to humanity within the next decade, he stated, "It is clearly unacceptable to take a 10% risk that could kill everyone." He also emphasized that with each increase in model capabilities, alignment research and safety measures must be strengthened, revealing that OpenAI has temporarily paused some learning tasks until it can provide more compelling safety justifications.
