Polish Prosecutors Charge Fifth Suspect in Zondacrypto Case
Polish prosecutors have brought two charges, including fraud, against Roman Ż., a former business partner of Sylwester Suszek, the founder of the cryptocurrency exchange BitBay. This marks the fifth individual to be charged since the investigation into Suszek's disappearance was incorporated into the case. Zondacrypto, which once had over a million registered users, halted trading in April this year due to a freeze on customer withdrawals, leading to estimated losses of at least $94 million for clients. The Polish prosecutors have launched an investigation into large-scale fraud and money laundering, receiving over 3,600 complaints as of June. The case is linked to Suszek's disappearance, which occurred in March 2022, and the two cases have been merged for investigation. Roman Ż. was arrested in Poland last Saturday, and prosecutors plan to request pre-trial detention for him, although he denies the charges. Additionally, Radosław Piesiewicz, the president of the Polish Olympic Committee, has also been charged with accepting protection money and favoring certain creditors when the exchange was on the brink of bankruptcy, while three others were detained last week.
