Korean Won to Dollar Exchange Rate Hits 1376.5 Won, Highest in a Year
The exchange rate of the Korean won to the dollar fell to 1376.5 won during trading on the 24th, marking the strongest level for the won since mid-September 2025. The weakness of the dollar and strong semiconductor exports have driven the strength of the won. According to Jin's report, the won has led the strength of Asian currencies. The dollar remains at a low point, and uncertainties regarding U.S. Treasury repurchases and sanctions on Iran are putting pressure on the dollar. According to the Korea Customs Service, exports from August 1 to 20, 2026, amounted to $55.27 billion, a 56.0% increase compared to the same period last year, while imports rose by 19.0% to $41.23 billion. The trade balance recorded a surplus of $13.975 billion. Semiconductor exports reached $26.03 billion, a 198.8% increase year-on-year, accounting for 47.2% of total exports. The dollar sales by exporting companies have also contributed to the strength of the won, and Christopher Wong, a foreign exchange strategist at China Bank, analyzed that the dollar sales by exporters and the weakness of the dollar provide ongoing support for the won. The won-dollar exchange rate reflects the price of won needed to purchase one dollar, and a decrease in the exchange rate indicates an increase in the value of the won.
