Irish Gangs Rent Vaults for Crypto Keys and Cash
Organized crime gangs in Ireland are renting vaults to store private keys and seed phrases for crypto wallets, along with cash and luxury items, according to the head of the Criminal Assets Bureau. Detective Chief Superintendent Michael Gubbins reported that this practice has emerged from investigations and has been communicated to the government's Anti-Money Laundering Steering Committee. Vault contents may include cryptocurrency keys, cash, watches, and even passports. The committee is preparing for EU regulations set to take effect next summer, which will ban cash transactions above 10000 euros and require businesses to identify cash spenders over 3000 euros. Crypto-asset service providers and luxury goods retailers will face increased scrutiny. Gubbins noted that gangs are using crypto to mitigate seizure risks, believing it offers anonymity, although he highlighted issues like price volatility and the risk of losing wallet passwords. Despite this, the use of crypto in Ireland remains basic, with cash still prevalent in drug trafficking. The bureau has observed professional launderers, including hawala operators, charging around 6% commission. In one investigation, 230000 euros were seized from a private vault. The bureau is also handling its largest crypto seizure, involving 6000 BTC from a cannabis grower, with over 130 million euros of the 360 million euros now realized. Last year, the bureau returned nearly 15000000 euros to the Irish exchequer.
