Human Rights Foundation Grants $600,000 in Bitcoin to 16 Projects
The Human Rights Foundation (HRF) has awarded over 60 million satoshis (approximately $600,000) in funding to 16 projects worldwide through its Bitcoin Development Fund, with projects located in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. The funding aims to strengthen the Bitcoin protocol, expand the practical use of Bitcoin, and provide secure communication and community infrastructure for dissidents. This is the second round of funding by HRF in 2026, following support for 26 projects in April. The funded projects cover various areas, including Bitcoin payments and development. The BitSpenda project plans to expand its mobile currency into a bridging tool for Bitcoin to reduce cross-border transfer costs in Africa; Project Island Resilience, based on Jamaican developer Dread's Flash wallet, plans to incorporate offline payment features using Bluetooth, NFC, and ecash; Bitzed helps Zambian users purchase Bitcoin directly through mobile currency. In terms of development, Libbitcoinkernel, Floresta, BDK-Dart, and WalletScrutiny focus on reusing core code, lightweight nodes, cross-platform wallet tools, and wallet auditing, respectively. In the Nostr ecosystem, projects such as Vector, Flotilla Chat, OpenAlert, and 0xchat have received support to provide censorship-resistant encrypted communication tools.
