Elderly Man in Hong Kong Loses Over HKD 13 Million to Cryptocurrency Investment Scam
Prefer us on GoogleIn the past week, the Hong Kong police received over 40 reports of investment scams, with total losses exceeding HKD 50 million. A man in his seventies received a message via WhatsApp from a stranger claiming to be a "cryptocurrency investment expert" from Singapore. Following the instructions, he opened a wallet and purchased USDT and ETH, then downloaded a counterfeit investment app provided by the scammer and transferred his assets to a designated address. The fake app showed profits, prompting him to double his investment. When he attempted to withdraw funds, he was refused and realized he had been scammed, resulting in a loss of over HKD 13 million.

Ahead of the September 14 open, global markets are focused on this week’s FOMC. After hotter-than-expected August inflation, odds of a September 16 hike rose above about 85%. Bitcoin broke below $77,000 to about $76,700–$76,800, with Ethereum near $2,500. In Friday’s session, communication services and industrials outperformed, while Apple closed up about 1.75%. CrowdStrike (CRWD) drew attention after unveiling AI-agent protection products at Fal.Con, and investors are also waiting for this week’s key CLARITY Act procedural vote and the rate decision.
