Brazilian Police Break Up Drug Trafficking Network, Nine Arrested
The Brazilian Federal Police conducted an operation against an international criminal group involved in cocaine smuggling to Europe and money laundering using cryptocurrencies. Nine individuals were arrested, and the court froze assets worth up to one billion Brazilian reais. The operation, known as Operation Commodity, began on July 23 and covered the states of São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Santa Catarina, and Espírito Santo. Officers executed 13 arrest warrants and 44 search warrants. The group had been operating since 2021, transporting approximately 6.5 tons of cocaine hidden in shipments of coffee and cement. Cryptocurrencies were used for money laundering, but the criminals also utilized shell companies and luxury goods. During the operation in Igaratá, there was an exchange of gunfire, resulting in the death of one suspect. The investigation is ongoing, and police are analyzing financial flows and connections between individuals and businesses.
