Blackstone Limits Cliffwater Private Loan Fund Redemptions to 5%
Blackstone and Cliffwater have limited the quarterly redemption cap of their flagship private loan funds to 5%. Investor redemption requests have reached 10-16% of the fund's shares, reaffirming the liquidity pressures in the $1.8 trillion private loan market. Blackstone's $77 billion private loan fund, BCRED, has decided to pay only 5% of the 10% redemption requests. The net asset value (NAV) of BCRED decreased from $24.68 at the end of January to $23.64 at the end of July. Blackstone stated that the fund's capital is sufficient, and the annualized return is reported to exceed 9% on leveraged loans. Cliffwater's $31 billion CCLFX also limited its 16% redemption requests to 5%. CCLFX had set its redemption at 7% for a 14% request in the first quarter but later reduced it to 5%. CEO Stephen Nesbitt explained that CCLFX's annualized return is 9.23%. Private loan funds are investment products that lend money to companies through private transactions, and when redemption requests surge, they are allocated proportionally within the set limits. This year, due to concerns over loan underwriting standards and corporate exposure, the private loan market has maintained a defensive atmosphere, with new capital inflows decreasing by about 82%.
